Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 will reach End of Life (EOL) on 14th October 2025. It might sound like something in the distant future, but if you’re still using Windows 10, now is the time to start preparing.
What Does Windows 10 End of Life Mean for You?
After 14th October 2025, Windows 10 will no longer receive free security updates. Your computer will still switch on and function, but it won’t be protected against new threats. This leaves systems increasingly vulnerable, as attackers often target known issues in unsupported software.
For organisations, this poses a serious compliance risk. If you’re certified under Cyber Essentials, running an unsupported operating system could put that certification—and your data—at risk.
What Are Your Options?
If you’re currently using Windows 10, you have two main paths forward:
1. Upgrade to Windows 11
The most secure long-term solution is to upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft is now focused entirely on this version, which has been developed with modern performance, security, and usability in mind. It also supports newer technologies like AI tools, including Microsoft Copilot, helping teams work more efficiently.
Many devices are eligible for a free upgrade, though older hardware may not meet the system requirements.
2. Extended Security Updates (ESU)
If upgrading straight away isn’t feasible, Microsoft offers a paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme. This extends critical security updates for up to three additional years, giving you more time to plan.
A few important points to note:
- Devices must be running Windows 10 version 22H2 to qualify.
- ESU is billed annually, with costs doubling each year.
- Business customers will pay more than individual users.
While ESU buys you some time, it’s not a permanent solution—and it comes at increasing cost.
What About Microsoft 365?
Initially, Microsoft stated that Microsoft 365 Apps (including Word, Excel and Outlook) would stop being supported on Windows 10 devices after October 2025. This has since been revised.
Microsoft now says these apps will continue to receive free security updates for up to three years after the Windows 10 end of life date. However, support will be limited. If performance issues arise, users may still be advised to upgrade to Windows 11 to resolve them.
Why Is This Happening?
Windows 10 has been in use for nearly a decade. Like previous versions, it’s reaching the natural end of its support lifecycle.
Microsoft is moving forward with Windows 11, which offers stronger security, better performance on modern hardware, and support for new technologies such as AI. Continuing to use Windows 10 means missing out on those advancements—and increasing your risk exposure.
