Cyber-attacks hitting small to medium businesses

    By Tecnica | Cyber Security News | Comments are Closed | 11 December, 2023 | 0

Cyber-attacks are hitting more and more small to medium businesses due to lack of cyber security and implementation of Cyber Essentials security mechanisms along with increased availability of ransomware to buy on the dark web. Individuals are taking the opportunity to target small to medium sized businesses and hold their data for ransom. The UK has seen a 70% increase in ransomware attacks this year alone and is expected to increase over the next 2 years. The UK are second, behind the US, for cyber-attacks costing the economy £27bn a year with new research suggesting ransomware attacks are assisting in the rising cost of inflation.

How does your business hold up against a cyber-attack?

UK businesses can be paralysed for weeks when dealing with a cyber-attack, especially an attack on a small business. On average it takes 38 days to recognise a cyber-attack by which time a lot of the damage is already done. It can then take around 43 days to recover fully, costing the business thousands of pounds. Can your business survive or sustain a cyber-attack? Does your business use Cyber Essentials? Implementing Cyber Essentials can hugely limit the risk of cyber-attacks and can strengthen business partnerships while also helping to assist with tender processes and requirements. Cyber-attacks have become so increasingly common that businesses are advised to consider an attack inevitable.

Why is cyber-security important for business and what is Cyber Essentials?

Any business working in the UK should be implementing the Cyber Essentials security mechanisms within their IT systems. Customers, clients and staff will expect their data to be safe in your hands and the result of having that data stolen will cost the business more than money. Cyber Essentials is the security standard set and backed by the government, and it is expected that all companies have this in place within their IT systems. It is advised that businesses will implement five basic control techniques: secure configuration, up to date software, firewalls and internet gateways, malware protection and access controls. Cyber Essentials certification is difficult to obtain and can come at a cost, however it is vital to protect your business data as well as the cost of recovering your data! the fines imposed by the government and disruption to business makes it an essential requirement. This is where Tecnica can help you by providing cost effective support in cyber security.
